Resin Pouring Notes

A place to keep what I've learned in my few weeks tinkering with resin.

  1. Stats - Pixiss Resin:
    1. 1:1 mix by volume or by weight
    2. 30 minute working time
    3. 24 hour curing time
      • Cures faster if you use more hardener
    4. 1 oz mixed is 26g
  2. Stats - Let's Resin x Daniel Cooper Resin:
    1. 1:1 mix by volume
    2. 30 minute working time - gets HELLA THICC after that
    3. 24 hour curing time
    4. Don't start it too warm or it gets hot and drastically shortens the working time
  3. Stats - Amazing Clear Cast Plus
    1. 1:1 mix by volume
    2. 30-40 minute working time
      1. If it thickens before you're done it can be thinned again with alcohol.
    3. 24-48 hour cure time
      1. Does seem to take longer to harden up or even get tacky
    4. Smelly!
    5. De-bubbles itself remarkably well!
  4. Stats - Let's Resin (standard)
    1. 1:1 mix by volume
    2. 30+ minute working time
    3. 16-24 hour de-mold time
    4. Low odor
  5. Dice:
    1. Using this dice mold
      1. 40g or 2 oz resin to fill - there will be extra
    2. New Mold received 10/4/23 - shop says Texas but item shipped from LA
      1. 40g or 2 oz resin to fill - there will be extra
      2. Easier to see into the mold and easier to remove cured dice
      3. Dice are bigger than #1
    3. Do not cure in the vacuum chamber - your dice will turn to foam
    4. Overfill the mold!!!
  6. Coasters (set of 4 round with holder):
    1. 10 ounces of resin to fill coaster molds and holder
    2. Backing in mica-colored black resin works better than black alcohol ink, but takes a lot of mica.
  7. Bubbles:
    1. Warm resin and hardener before mixing and keep mixture warm while working
    2. Alcohol and alcohol ink help thin the mixture and pop bubbles but too much will change your resin formula
    3. Vacuum the resin before pouring
    4. Make sure the mold is dry - water leaves "bubble" voids
  8. Additives:
    1. Mica powder hides bubbles
    2. Glow-in-the-dark powder sinks rather than suspends
    3. Color-shift mica powder can be permashifted by:
      1. Adding alcohol ink
        1. Add black to make it darker
        2. Add a color that matches one of the shifts to encourage it toward that color
      2. Adding a solid colored mica powder
        1. If it is a green/blue shift, adding green will sway the whole thing green
        2. If it is a green/blue shift, adding blue will sway the whole thing blue
    4. Let resin cure some before attempting to back with alcohol ink or it will sink in
  9. Mold-Making - Alumilite Amazing Mold Rubber
    1. How much do I need?
      1. Pour water into your mold container, then pour into a measuring glass to determine volume. Then calculate based on the 2oz:1scoop ratio in the instructions
    2. Mix EXTREMELY well
    3. Let cure longer than the instructions say - Mine took 36 hours to fully cure. Should be a firm squishy, not "this feels like there might be liquid inside" squishy.
  10. Daniel Cooper Petri Effect
    1. Tim Holtz Snow Cap white alcohol ink is too heavy. Dilute with isopropyl alcohol.
      1. 1:1.5 ink to alcohol still too heavy
      2. 1:2 too light? Maybe?
      3. Attempt 4 should be 1:1.75 (20 drops white ink to 35 drops alcohol) - Still too heavy - blobs sink to bottom of mold/top of piece. Returning to 1:2.
    2. Using the Daniel Cooper resin from Let's Resin, stirring stage is at about 30 minutes for my environment.
    3. Using the Amazing Clear Cast Plus resin the stirring stage is at about 45 minutes.
  11. Starry Alcohol Ink
    1. Daniel Cooper recommends Marabu Rainbow alcohol ink, but it is hard to find here. In his video #30 he claims that mixing a rainbow shift mica powder with alcohol will accomplish the same effect. Seems to work for me!
