Zone 1a – Cattle
Fifteen acres surrounded by electrical fencing divided into
2 sections – 3 acres and 12 acres. One Milking Shorthorn bull in the 3 acres
with one pecan tree. Two Milking Shorthorn
cows in the 12 acres with one pecan tree.
In November of years 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 breed the bull with
Cow A (Henrietta Pearl). In years 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 breed the bull with Cow B
(Mabel Lou) in November. Calving should take place the following July or
August. Wean calves at 6-8 months of age. Expect 1 calf per cow. Expect around
6 gallons of milk per day starting in year 2.
In year 6 butcher the Year 1 calf from Henrietta Pearl. In
year 7, butcher the year 2 calf from Mabel Lou. Follow this pattern to butcher
1 cow per year.
Maximum of 6-7 cattle on land.
Zone 1b – Sheep and Goats
Six acres surrounded by electrical fencing and divided into
8 equal paddocks of .75 acres each. Populate as follows:

Ram Group: 1 Katahdin ram, 5 Nubian does

Ewe Group: 5 Katahdin ewes, 1 Nubian buck
Groups will rotate every 7 days with the Ram Group starting
in Paddock A and rotating to B>C>D>E>F>G>H and the Ewe Group
starting in Paddock E and rotating to F>G>H>A>B>C>D>E.
Each paddock is to contain 1 bat box. Paddocks A, C, F, and
H are to contain one pecan tree each.
In late August, grant the Ram access to the Ewes for
breeding. Lambing should take place in March-April and weaning should take
place 8-12 weeks later. Lambs should be ready for slaughter at 6-8 months of
age. Expect 1-2 lambs per ewe.
Maximum of 16 sheep on land.
In September, grant the buck access to the does for
breeding. Kidding should take place in March and weaning should take place from
May-July. Kids should be ready for slaughter at 6-8 months of age. Expect 2
kids per doe.
Maximum of 16 goats on land.

Zone 3 – The Barn
Situated between the cattle pasture and goat/sheep pasture
to allow access from both. The barn should be a minimum of 880 square feet,
preferably up to 1,000 to allow for more flexible use of space. Include an 80
square foot rabbit hutch and a 150 square foot fenced play area. Play area
should be astro-turf and contain sand pits. Stock with 20 French Angora rabbits.
Breeding can occur 3-4 times per year with 4-12 kits per litter. Rabbits are
ready for butcher at 14-16 weeks.
In the Barn Zone will also be 2 or more 500 gallon water
tanks to service zones 1a and 1b.
